Will this transom fix be a problem?

I am redoing my jon boat transom and came across a snag. The wood I cut for the transom is much wider than the cap rail at the back of the boat. See the attached photos. I'm planning right now on being only electric and will have a transom mounted TM on this. Will this be a problem either now or in the future when I want to put a small outboard on it?

Yes, Also curious what type of wood that is? Is it water resistant?

No, I don't think it will present an issue being wider than the cap rail. It is a little hard to tell, but does it go all the way to the floor of the boat? You may want to cut it shorter if so because you do not want it to come in contact with any sitting water that may come into the boat during use or storage. Just my thoughts.

No I did not make my transom from an old headboard...although mine has taken a lot of abuse. ;)

I made it out of two 3/4" pieces of non PT 2x10 lumber I bought that I laminated together with Gorilla Glue and then coated with spar urethane. The color is just some stain I had left around the garage. I may strip that and just paint it the same color as the interior.

No the wood doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the boat, so standing water isn't an issue.

I'm not a "Tin Boat" guy, but... Work with wood my entire life. If you keep it properyly sealed from the elements, always predrill any holes and seal the holes and all hardware with marine sealant and do diligent maintenance to the wood, she will last a VERY LONG TIME. I REALLY like the look. Kinda looks like Red Mahogany to me!!!!!
