1984 mercury 50 hp,won't idle,

my 84 mercury 50 hp,just got this pontoon with the motor and it starts in the water barrel,but i put it in the lake and it would not stay at idle without choking it.and once we finally got it in gear and moving it would not run wide open,found the two top plug did'nt look like they were firing.any idea's

Sounds like the carbs are dirty and need a cleaning or rebuild. Might want to check the fuel pump also. JMO

thanks oldman,going to check the compression,fire,then on to the carbs and pump.the top 2 plugs did'nt look like they had fired at all and we ran it on the lake for a little while.it would only run up to 2900-3000 rpms,i figure just on the 2 bottom plugs.would this problem be in the top carb if the bottom one was working?

did'nt mess with any other testing,just cleaned the upper carb and boom!!!,got fuel to it and is running,thanks a bunch oldman570.:)

Come back anytime as we here on the fourm will help all that we can. There are several on here that have run into troubles with motors like you have and might be able to get you on the right path to fixing and learning more about motors.
