Re: 73 25hp johnson breaking pins

First question: Are you using the correct pin? It is supposed to be stainless steel.

Another possibility is a worn out clutch dog. That will make it come out of gear, rotate 180 degrees, and slam back into gear. The violent jolt can break the pin. ESPECIALLY if you aren't using stainless pins.

A very badly worn hole in the prop shaft or slot in the prop will be hard on the pins too, but it would have to be terribly bad to cause the problem as you describe it.

What type of pins are you using ?? Stainless or brass ?? Is the prop nut tight when you put it back on ??

jmo, but if it was jumping out of gear before the rock.....the rock put the last nail in the coffin for your clutch dog.

You didn't say anything in your first post about jumping out of gear. Agree with nwcove + 1. One should tell all when posting a problem.

Re: 73 25hp johnson breaking pins

i thought it was just another problem since it had not broke pins before. well, i tore into the gear casing and found numerous problems. someone caulked where the o rings was . the shift rod was bent and few other things. the front and reverse gears looked good though . I am going to replace alot of the things in there including clutch dog and cradle. thanks for the advice.
