Mercruiser 3.0 Tachometer

I've got a 1995 mercruiser 3.0. When not even close to WTO, the tach exceeds 5000. How can I hook up an external tach to compare the readings to determine if the installed tach is correct?

First off look at the back of the tach and make sure it is set for the correct number of cylinders. A small rotary switch uses a tint screwdriver.

Get a handheld PhotoTach...works great for comparison. Just put a reflective strip on the pulley and aim!
