I have a 1978 johnson 70 hp, and when it will start, it only runs while choke is pushed in. Any ideas what I should do about that? Will cleaning the fuel filter help this?

Sounds more like you need some carb work. But check your compression and spark first.

I would bet the low speed jets are clogged, at the least. Agree with Boob.

Any tips on finding these low speed jets? I've been through the manual pretty thoroughly, and don't remember anything about those.

Will spraying some carb cleaner in there do the trick, or do you think some major carb work is what will have to happen?

Spraying carb cleaner into the throat of the carb will not clean any of the internal passages or the orifices inside the carb.
To clean it properly you must take it apart and make sure to remove all orifices and sure all passages are clean.

That's what I was afraid of. I think I've had it out maybe 3 or 4 times since I had the carb gone through, so it might be time for me to try to do it myself. Thanks for the info.
