1977 johnson 70 hp, shifting rod? instalation help

i am going to take off the jet drive that is on my 70 and put on a regular lower unit. my motor does not have a bellcrank rod. do i have to remove the powerhead to take the rod out of old motor and then also to replace it in mine. thanks

undo the shifting rod connection below the starter undo the bolts what ever contraption you, ve got on , screw the 70hp shifting rod into your gear box line the drive shaft & gear rod up in the leg & reconect the rod with the leaver under the carb
