I have a 40 hp Johnson out board model #J40TLEOD and the forward/reverse linkage is bindinding and getting harder and harder to get in or out of gear.I have have disconnected the cable and it is moving freely so I suspect I will have to take the bottom leg off and check the mechanical linkage. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a web site that I can access for trouble shooting and disassembly instructions?

Thanks. Comments are appreciated.

i'm no expert but i had to open my bottom gear case ('66 40hp) and found a lot of rust down there . *CAUTION* don't remove the screw for the clutch dog !,... have you checked the gear oil lately ? make sure you find the oil fill screw .
