I reinstalled the outdrive and am having shift problems. Its a 1988 Alpha One mated to a 5.7L engine. After installing the drive, it will not shift. I have the brass shift lever facing forward and in forward rear. The shift cable and roller seem to be operating properly .After examing the diagrams in the manual for the 100 time, wonder if the shift lever should face back so its on the same axis as the shift coupler?

Tilt the drive up and look to see if the shift shaft on the drive is mated to the shift shaft on the bellhousing.

Yes, the shift lever is fully seated in the shift shaft on the bell housing. It seems that the shafts need to line up to turn.

Yes they need to line up to shift, and if they are together, they should be lined up. Unless one of them is bent from removing or trying to install it without being in forward.
