How much test water do I need in tub to run outboard

I have a 72 100HP johnson that I want to run in a tub/barrel The tub I currently have can only full the water up to where the lower unit starts (just above the cavitation plates). It is considerably above the intake where I normally put the flush when running on a hose. Is this ok to run or do I need the water further up?

If the water intakes are fully covered and don't vent while running you are good to go.

By venting I'm guessing your talking about air getting into the intake rather than water?
