Can I use a inboard hydraulic cylinder for an outboard motor?

Ok. So I am working on my houseboat...When I bought it at an auction, it had the motor removed and steering lines removed. Anyway, I have a 70hp Merc. 1982 I think...Since the original steering was hydraulic.,I want to stick with that. I went to a boat bone yard and we found a mint condition inboard hydraulic cylinder and would like to know if I can install that on my boat for steering for an outboard. If anyone can help me out that would be fantastic. Desynerguy

no, highly unlikely. The original was powered by the steering wheel at relatively low pressure. The cylinder you have is meant to be powered by a hydraulic pump off the engine, basically the same as power steering on a vehicle. Vastly different pressures and volumes with each.

If the steering is straight hydraulic (helm, hoses, ram only) and not power steering Yes! You wouldn't want to use outboard steering with an IO. Will it fit the tilt tube or is it a side mount?

Anything can be made to work with a little ingenuity, if the cylnder is too large it will take more turns of the wheel with low effort, if it is too small the steering will be quick but high effort. Good luck with this and keep us posted how it goes.
