I just bought this engine for our boat yesterday and the lower unit/ foot is locked up. Im a very experienced heavy truck/ diesel mechanic but don't know much about outboards. The long shaft coming down from motor isn't locked up, but the prop shaft is. How do i get this thing apart? Can anyone send me an illustrated parts breakdown? Is the big spanner nut behind prop left or right hand thread?

Tim;

What is your engine s/n?

Here is the parts list for s/ns 5625108 and up:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/684.cfm

The bearing carrier nut is a right hand thread.

The service manual for that engine is P/N: 90-86134--4

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-MERCURY...-MANUAL-75-80-85-90-140-150-115-/300699998768

In the interim here is the condensed version of the Clymer manual which will help you get started. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived:

See page 125 for teardown of the LU.

Thanks Gerry for the reply. I will download the manual pages you suggested. Looks like it was run in salt water and not flushed after, threads are almost nonexistent, do they make a spanner nut socket to fit the prop shaft nut or do I try hammer n blunt end punch

Tim;

I make my own out of stock tube that fits over the prop shaft with slots cut to match the nut slots. The tube can be long enough that you can drill a hole through the end for a bar to pass through for undoing. But I have to admit that I have done my share of the hammer and punch trick.

Good luck with it.
