New boat and new location boating have cost me a prop.

I have a 14.5x19 three blade but wanted to know about going to a four blade and will a 14 x 19 work?

Advantages and disadvantages to a 3 or 4 blade.

Re: Props

My boat came from the factory with 13.75 x 21 three blade stainless props. They have been changed to 14 x 20 four blade aluminum and the I really love the change in performance. Hole shot is way better and my planing/cruising rpm's dropped from about 3500rpm to 3200rpm at around 22 knots. Couldn't be happier.

Capt Red might be wrong this time.......you might try this question in the Prop Forum!

Re: Props

Your boat (dry weight of about 4200lbs) needs a larger diameter prop (single engine) to move that weight more effectively.

This is precisely what the 15-16" diameter props are made for.

If you can provide the WOT rpm your motor turns using the 14.5 X 19 prop, I'll be able to give a recommendation concerning which larger diameter prop might better work for you.

Jestor68,

When it is planed out it is turning 3900 to 4100 at 75% power or so. That is with my family aboard 92 adults, 2 toddlers and a infant)

Need to know what it turns wide open. And a feel for how it accelerates out of the hole(time to plane).

Re: Props

Wide open is around 4200 trimmed out and the wife says it feels sluggish coming out of the hole.

I just sized down from a 32' so anything feels faster than it does. I would agree that it could feel a little better but I was taking it easy with the baby on board as well.

The four prop sounds like a deal if it is practical.

If the boat feels sluggish its those "92 adults" you have aboard. But perhaps you are "WRONG"?lol
I also believed I was never wrong but I was mistaken.
We are making progress; but It would help if you answer the Qs in the stickys at the top of the prop forum all in one place
it will be a little easier to follow.

Re: Props

1) Performance issue you are trying to correct.
Busted the prop and looking for best replacement
2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum.
Solas OE0809 Aluminum
3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required).
14.5 x 19
4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful)
4200 (only been out on boat once) with a weight of 500 pounds.
5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP
1991 5.7 ltr OMC drive 190 hours on engine and drive.
6) Boat make model, year, length and weight
1991 Chris Craft 23.8 Concept Cuddy

Re: Props

Based on the assumption that the rpm readings are those you were getting before damaging the prop, my recommendation is:

The Solas Amita 15-1/2 X 17 pitch prop. Don't let the 2" drop in pitch fool you. The inch of diameter increase offsets an inch of pitch, so it's as if you're only dropping one inch of pitch. This prop will produce noticeably better acceleration to get you up on plane faster and increase your full throttle rpm by about 200; bringing you up to 4400-4500 rpm at WOT.

Is your boat equipped with trim tabs?

No trim tabs, just bought and prior owner said he never felt like he needed them.

Re: Props

No trim tabs; good. I just needed to check before suggesting that you put a set of Doel Fins on your outdrive. 00441.jpg These little hydrofoils will get you planing off in half the time, as well as improve the over all handling of your boat. I call them the $40 wonder. :)
