clanking noise when taking off

Hello all,

I have an issue that has been going on for a few years. I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri that has an OMC 3.0 with Cobra outdrive. The boat runs great most of the time. Occasionally, especially after pulling a skier or tube, when shifting into gear, after the boat begins to take off, before being fully planed out, I hear a loud clank, feel the hesitation and then the boat continues to operate fine. Once the clank and hesitation occurs, the boat runs fine until I stop again. On a typical day out on the lake, it could happen 4-5 times. I had the lower unit taken off last year and the mechanic said all was fine. It almost feels and sounds like hitting a log in the water when taking off.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. All of the lower drive fluids are fine, I check them regularly. Thanks so much.

Sounds like your forward gear and clutch dog are going bad.
