I have always been an Evenrude man....but I just picked up a boat with an 1980- 80 hp Merc ob and before I put gas and power to it, I was hoping some of you can share some TYPICAL mercury issues to look for.

I haven't turned the motor over yet other than by hand. each cylinder has compression and when I apply batter, i will check all 4 cylinders before trying to start it.

Im asking for things to look for before It turns over and after. Do they leak often in certain areas, need anything special done to them...etc. A motor is a motor is a motor, BUT I know different brands have their quirks

if it has not been run for two or three I would rebuild water pump. check lower unit oil and check fuel lines .also check wiring before start up. if it starts your in the lake. if not think I would get service manual . i can down load it from www.tradebit.com for about $5.00.

Use a compression gauge, if it has less than 100 psi., you should walk away.
