Intermittent Speedometer Reading

I am the new owner of a mid 70's Vanguard Gemini 16 with a mid 70's Merc 85.
Have never owned a boat with a speedometer so not sure what the problem may be.
The speedometer was reading fine on one trip, then a few hours later no reading at all.
The pitot that is mounted on the transom, how far into the water does it have to sit?
I see it has a hole in it and must get its pressure reading through this.
It does hinge up so that I am guessing doesn't get damaged,
do I need to make sure it is pointed all the way down?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Intermittent Speedometer Reading

Welcome to iboats.

Check the plastic tube has not developed a hole or has become disconnected. There is also a chance you picked up some debris in the line.

It shoud be just below the bottom of the hull. It does hinge up so make sure it is snapped into position as far down as it will go.
