Last weekend our Stringray 220sx overheated. Gauge was all over the place so I shut her down when the alarm came on and got towed back to the slip. We pulled the thermostat and replaced with a new one which we believed to be the problem (impeller changed last fall).

We took her out again today, keeping at about 3,000 RPM for a nice cruise. I was fixated on the temp gauge the whole time as it rose to 180 and would trigger the thermostat and fall back. This went on for a while and then she spiked to 200 and the alarm followed. I pulled her to neutral and the temp went down - was able to get back to the slip at around 1,000 rpm.

Called the mechanic on duty and explained what had happened - immediate response was the impeller.

While I am not scared to replace another impeller, I would like some experience if you would to see if anyone has had similiar issues. When I opened the engine compartment, the left side of the engine, along with the water hoses was cool to the touch, however the right side was hot (not so hot that you could not keep your palm on it).

It seems to me that water is getting to the left side very well, however the left side (appears the hose is going through the thermostat housing) is either restricted or not being pumped through.

Is there a sea pump on the front of the engine that might have gone bad or is the only impeller located in the lower unit?

Thanks much!

The impeller is the FIRST thing you check on any overheat. It only takes a plastic bag in the water to damage one.

Care to share any engine info like year, or better yet serial number? Things change from model to model and serial number range.

Don S, thanks much. The year model is a 1998, however I do not have the serial number handy at this time.

As Don mentioned, The impeller is the FIRST thing you check on any overheat. Additionally you mentioned one riser/manifold was hotter then the other. Might indicate blocked manifold/riser. Rust/etc can restrict water flow. If after replacing the water pump impeller the problem is still there I might suggest removing the hot side manifold and riser and check for rust. First take the rubber hose off the end of the riser and see if there is a build up of rust at the outlet which might indicate further investigation is in order.
