Just bought an old mercury 1400 for $150. It has low compression on top cylinder (50) and around 85 on the remaining 5. I pulled the exhaust plate (i think) off the powerhead and I can see metal shavings in and around the top cylinder. what kind of damage has likely happened. Best case and worse case scenerio? Thanks

Is it a V6 or an inline ? Being a 140 I'm guessing inline here .

Destroyed piston. Best and worst case. The cylinder WILL be scored. Your other numbers suck too. Time for a complete rebuild.

Time for a rebuild if the piston is scored. Rebuilds can cost around $2500 in some locations. You might be better off parting it out and see if you can get your money back if it is a inline 6 motor. A few calls to local boat motor shops for rebuilb prices will give you a better idea as to what you want to do with it.
