Well, I am a newbee to this forum stuff. I have a Bayliner that has a soft spot at the back of the ski locker. After finding and reading some these thread things, it looks as though, this might be a gut job. I was wondering about a material found at Lowes called PVC Board. It 3/4" thick and all kinds of widths. It is totally water and rot proof. Could this material possibly be used for the stringers? Hope this isn't a stupid question. I know nothing about the strength is has or hasn't. It would be the last stringer to ever get replaced, if it could be used. Be patient with me, not real familiar with this sort of stuff. Thanks!

is this stuff expensive? what is your reason not wanting to go the standard glass over wood method?

Not really bad priced. It would save in steps to complete and the cost for not having to cover in glass. Just don't know if it is strong enough for decking to be on top of.

i am by no means a boat builder, but I am assuming that the hull strength comes from the fiberglass around the stringers, and not the stringers themselves. What do you plan on using for your deck? I say go for it and tell us if it works..but I don't think its a good idea? Wood and glass lasted 20+ years, no reason to ruin a long term solution with a questionable replacement that is unproven. BUT I am a fan of trying new things - I am going to use Paint Epoxy for my interior walls and side panels to save on $ and not sure how thats going to work...but im not compromising the structural integrity of the hull either.
Good Luck!

I am going to use plywood for the deck. I guess that I could always glass around the pvc board stringer, and if the glassing wasn't 100 percent sealed, I wouldn't have to worry about any wood inside starting to rot.

yea...but there is something to be said for doing it right the first time - :)
spend less $ on the PVC wood and more time on the glass work and you'll have a boat that will last you another 30 years. I'd still go with the tried and true method for the hull and other structural needs. Not the place you want to skimp on the details.

My question would be how well will glass adhere to it....especially under stress. Just finishing up mine and hope to splash it this Friday. I will have $2,400 in my rebuild and that's not including upholstery. I will have however a boat that will last another 30 yrs plus and I know it was built as well as possible. Good luck with your build.
