Mrs. Bubba scared me to death last night because she came in my office, sat down and said, "Can we talk"? Now all you guys that measure your marriage in decades know that opening line and know it can strike fear in the strongest of men. :D

Fortunately this time she just wanted to know if we could take a vaction this winter to "some place overseas". She had no idea where but she seems to be certain she wants to see more of the world than north america so its now on me to come up with some ideas. I got nothing...

So for you that have spent time in distant lands toss out some ideas. I'd like to make it a two week vacation and go somewhere that American's are not on the menu.

It has been a long time, but of the foreign countries I have visited New Zealand is at the top of my list. I never felt more welcome anywhere.

Depends what you want. Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica are good "resort countries" If you want "different" then Japan has a lot to offer.
All depends what you want to do.

I have friends that have been recently to the Bahamas and Exumas - the pictures where fantastic

A good friend of my uncle's lives in Belize as an ex-pat. the area looks great to visit.

Australia and New Zealand are on my short list. Italy and Greece are on the girlfriends list.

You bring up a good point Bubba amount Americans (ideally) not being on the menu....hmm. Ok, how about a 1-2 week Mediterranean cruise? I think since that big Concordia cruise mess up last winter...prices have dropped substantially as they try to regain confidence in the industry and I'm sure navigation has improved with new requirements, processes, etc.
As well, I believe the security on these ships and the ports of call is probably quite high and quite safe, plus you get to see a variety of places, catch some sun, good food...maybe do some homework for the next trip on specific places to visit?;):)
...just a little food for thought.
All Good

Bubba, if you play your cards right, I bet you can hook up with iboaters in a variety of countries and go boating in each one.

what does she like to do bubba cos lets face it what you like to do on holiday is a mute subject anyway. if shes into history, walking, buying old junk cheap then anypart of the uk (england, ireland, scotland, wales) will do. if shes into beach life then the uk is the last place you want to go. its a little expensive but americans are welcome so thats a bonus.

You being a boater and not having a criuse at the top of your list???

Cruises are the best since you have the same hotel room without the need to keep packing and unpacking each time you reach another country. Unlimited food and you can take excursions at each place with a group or rent a car on your own for the day. That's what we've done on two different cruises over the years. Best value for your dollar you will ever get.!

The cruise ships are in the Mediterranean now and will make the trip over this fall. They offer a 2-3 days in the Med. then across the Atlantic, into the islands then home port in Florida.
The price is outstanding and they are not crowded, but then there is the airfare to Europe.

I've been working on the admiral but she's leery about the trans Atlantic crossing.

I should have said, "No boating this vacation". I admit, the vast majority of our vacations and get aways have involved water and boating and she wants to do something different. Oh yeah, no place cold either.

I sort of like the idea of Australia myself... Not certain she would because she hinted she wants to do the "city things" like museums, plays, great supper clubs, street vendors, etc. Needs to get away from the farm thing and see people I guess.

Mexico or Brazil

So just to get this straight, its a summer vacation in the winter not a winter vacation in the winter???

That would pretty much rules out northern Europe. :D

I have never seen the need to leave the United States. Unless it's to go to Canada. The USA has everything from desert to rainforest. From below sea level to 20,000+ feet. And overseas? HAWAII!!!!!!!!!!!

If I were forced, by a gun, to leave this country for a vacation, I would think Australia would be the way to go. They speak English there, don't hate Americans (and Bubba, you will be thankful for this), and it's wild wonderful country.

Depends on the needs/wants. Are you looking to revisit eachothers heritage/culture, are you looking for an amaricanized tourist destination abroad, or are you looking for just a unique experience relevant to where you are visiting.

I hear New Zealand is nice and a lot of folks I've talked to that are more well-traveled then myself always recommend New Zealand first for it's "beauty and serenity". But if you're there you my as well stop by Australia.

If you are looking for a tropical vacation with not a lot of stress and planning, try a Caribbean or Mexican all-inclusive.

If you are looking for the Upscale vacation, go to Vienna or Paris or Bangkok. If you are looking for the third-world vacation, go to Prague or Budapest.

There's soo many dang oppurtunities....just don't stay in the U.S. There is soo much of the world out there to see.

I agree with you about staying in the states but, well I've sort of insisted on that for several decades and Mrs. Bubba has made it clear that's not in the cards this time. (I travel over seas a lot with my work while she stays behind.) I figure I have to let her have her way once every two or three decades. ;)

Ah come on, what's a few decades more? Odds say you'll die first, then she can go abroad without you! joking, of course. ;)
