i have a v8 mercruiser horizon efi engine, serial # m011557, I cant find the year. also since this is a closed colant system, can i use standard automotive gaskets & parts like head gaskets, freeze out plugs etc, since anti freeze would be flowing through the engine & not raw water?

It's a 2000 model, 444206HN1
Yes, standard automotive gaskets will work with the closed cooling system.

cool, thanks don, next question, since this motor has the raw water pump on it, should I consider setting up my coolant system this way & just remove the raw water pump in the alpha unit? I really am hesitant about drilling a hole in the bottom of my boat but if it is a better set up, I would consider it.

With closed, the engine driven pump is normally used because of the larger volume of water from the inboard pump.

That engine was also for a Bravo drive, which means the ECM isn't set up for use with the shift interrupt switch needed on an Alpha drive. Which "Alpha" drive are you going to be using?

It's an alpha 1 gen II drive
So what's the answer to running Eco setup w/ an alPha?

Not sure what you mean by "Eco setup".

Does the closed cooling system also cool the exhaust manifolds? If not, then you can use the pump in the drive. The engine drive pump is usually used when the manifolds are cooled too. Lot of extra heat from them.

not eco, sorry autocorrect i meant EFI. the raw water cools the manifolds not the antifreeze.

so am I screwed on the EFI set up? is their a way to modify this to use the alpha outdrive & interrupt switch?

I've never tried to convert one. That engine never had an option for the Alpha drive. Have no idea if the wiring harness is the same as a Bravo, I do know other versions couldn't use the Bravo ECM with Alpha drives

yeah i called merc, they said the harness, ecm & shift plate need to be changed, so, not worth doing. i guess I will be running carb on this motor.
