Recently, A ratcheting noise has been coming from my outdrive. The first thing I checked was the cable adjustment and even with moving the shift lever by hand did not change the problem. With the engine running there are no problems going from fwd to reverse and back again. It's in nuetral where the noise is noticable at idle and gets bad when you rev the engine. with the muffs on the prop is always trying to turn in one direction or the other.

It sounds like the shift cable needs a little adjustment that the unit is dragging the cluth dog because it's not completely out of gear

That's what I initially thought. When I was troubleshooting it, I moved the shift lever on the O/D by hand and couldn't find nuetral w/out dragging the clutch dog in fwd or rev. Could it be the spring at the reverse gear is bad?

There is not a spring like a O/B, the shift shaft is connected to a yoke that moves a spool and shaft that is connected to the clutch dog to shift the unit. Ck the outside (rear) shift cable were it fastens to the bell housing to make sure the cables outside casing has not came loose and is moving as you shift
