Are vortec 300 hp engines better than pre vortec?

Hi, If I build up my carbed 1984 350cid 260hp merc to 300 hp using flat top pistons and original heads, is it as good as a carbed vortec 350, or is the vortec better on fuel and getting around the same hp?
time to decide, pulling 1984 350 tonite!
Any thoughts? If the vortec is better it will make the cost worth it.......
