Just got a new to me 2050 Capri with a 3.0l. Took it out yesterday and at WOT we are showing around 3900 on the tack. Boat feels a little sluggish but runs good. I'm going too go over the carb and everything tomorrow/ tune it up. Any suggestions about how too get a little more top end out of this boat? Is this a common RPM to be spinning at WOT. The engine states 44-4800 on it I think, or maybe its 4200-4600. What is a common RPM for this set up at WOT? Anything I should check first? Thanks, I've been reading up on this on the site as much as I can and I appreciate all the help.

You should be at least in the mid 4k range for WOT. It could just be overpropped. What size prop do you have on it? That is a big boat to be pushing with that engine.

The prop has 3.75x 21 I'm guessing that's the prop size. Is it worth putting a stainless prop on it? What size should be in the boat. At full throttle last night around 3850rpms WOT we were at 28.2 knots on gps. Will a smaller prop help with this slow issue? Thanks!

Props are not your problem at this point. Since the boat is new to you, look at the port side of the upper housing of the drive and post the SN and gear ratio of your drive.
Also, are you using the trim correctly? That is usually a problem with first time IO users.

Re: Bayliner 2050 3.0l WOT questions.

Ive had a friend who was a boat owner out with me for the last 2 trips.
The SN on the Alpha is 0F55321 and the prop has Michigan Wheel 031026 and 3.75 21 which I assume is a 13.75 diameter. Is this setup right for this application? I will be replacing the prop either way because it looks shabby and appears to have done some digging. There is a 1/4 crack on it also, so before the next outing this will be replaced.

On the trim tab issue. The trim tabs have been in the down position almost the whole time, the UP on the trim tab does not work apparently so until I get that solved this is were I stand. Where should I start too address the up function not working? Where should the trim tabs be when the boat is planed out and under WOT? The boat planes out just fine but I'm pegged at 3850rpms. I appreciate all the help so far, thanks!

The alpha drive has 1.94 on it, that's the last link in the equation I was missing. How should I adjust the trim tabs at WOT and do you think I am over proped also? Thanks!

Not the trim tabs, the drive trim. If you have the drive all the way down you will be plowing through the water and will not get to full rpm.

Trim the drive up as you are running until you get the best speed and rpm at the same time.

If you want to change props, posts the question over in the prop forum would be your best idea.

It's really not THAT big of a boat to push with that engine. I have '99 Bayliner 1952 cuddy, and mine goes just fine...approximately 40something mph at WOT when trimmed properly, depending on water surface conditions and wind. GREAT fuel economy with those engines, too! I think that prop is the same one I have on mine...not totally sure tho.
