wiring problems

hi i am new at this. i have a 1985 four winns 160 marquis that had a 120hp 2.5 and the motor was haft missing when got it i then bought a 1978 glasion with a 140 hp motor in so i took out the haft of the 120 hp and put in the 78 140 hp i was told to use my 85 wiring harness but the wiring code in the shop book is not the same color code on the wiring harness is there anyone no where i can find a diagraph for it thank you

Ayuh,.... Are ya havin' trouble wirin' up the motor, or the motor to the boat,..??

You should use the motor harness that matches the distributer, 'n alternator yer usin'..??..

i haveing problem wiring up the motor from the harness that was on the old motor i dont rember the way the old motor was wired

Ayuh,.... So which half of which motors ended up bein' used,..??

If the boat is an 85, use the engine wiring harness for the 85 engine. The 78 is not only a different color code, it probably had an ammeter instead of a voltmeter, which really changes the wiring.

Here are a bunch of wiring diagrams from that era. You are just going to have to pick out what you have. Lots of choices.

i am useing the 1978 wole motor it is a 140 hpi/o with my 1985 wiring harness for my 85 motor

If you are using the old wiring harness from the 85 on the 78 140, what exactly is the problem?

dont remember the diagraph on how it is wired the 78 motor has wiring code then the 85 motor but i have it hook up to when i turn on the key to start it it cranks but there is no spark to the coil it a new coil i have not change the points yet and i think i have the wiring back word

Below is the wiring diagram for your particular engine since you are using the newer harness.
Hook up the wires correctly and put some points in it and it'll probably start.

don s do u have a wiring diagram for a per alpha out drive i need to find out where the 4 wires go to out of the trans on a 1985 4 winns

Ayuh,.... 2 are for the trim limit, 'n 2 are for the trim sender...

The trim gauge sender wiring is shown in the diagram I posted earlier. The limit switch is shown in wiring diagrams in this file.
