Oil on cavitation plate

I noticed some oil on the cavitation plate of my 2010 Yamaha 150 4-stroke this afternoon while getting it ready for a trip this weekend. I saw somewhere on this forum that this might be normal for a 2-stroke engine but I am not sure if this holds true for 4-strokes.

Any ideas? From what I can tell it appears to be coming from the top under the midsection cover. It is about time for annual maintenance so I might be bringing it in to be serviced soon.

Any ideas?

Re: Oil on cavitation plate

check the oil level to see if it is low(leaking) or overfull and overflowing.

Maybe bottom crankshaft seal or making oil

Outboards are notorious for blowing, leaking, oozing oil from various areas. When you tilted up the motor, it probably just ran down from the powerhead area...probably nothing to worry about, but you could remove the upper cowling and look around in there. Good Luck!:)

Re: Oil on cavitation plate

Thanks for the help. Turns out it was a leaking oil pump. Glad I had it checked out.
