I purchased a 2001 Marada with a blown 3.0 mercruiser 181 (knew this ahead of time). The 4th piston was shattered. I have ordered a rebuilt replacement motor. The blown motor had sat for 3 years prior to being cranked. I have been getting different advice on replacing the old exhaust manifold and elbow. The exhaust manifold looks to be in good shape with the flanges on that and the elbow still pretty smooth. The elbow has a good amount of rust inside of it. Is there anything else I should be looking at regarding the manifold and elbow before I add the expense of replacing? I don't want to take any chances but I also do not want to add the expense of the replacements if I don't have to.

Salt or Fresh water boat? If salt I would replace at this time.
If fresh I would rod out as much rust in the elbow as I could and give it a try.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... The Gasket Faces of both parts, where they meet, should be clean, smooth, 'n 'bout 1/4" wide....

If less than that, it's a necessary expense...
