I was out a few weeks ago at night, and after 8 or 9 hrs of fishing/running 1-2miles at 30+mph the high heat alarm slowly started and came to a screech. I checked the oil since I thought I was low in the reservoir and did a visual check of the pee stream and saw it was fine. I slowly worked my way back to the launch and pulled off the water.
Got it home and wound up convincing myself it was the thermostat, even more so once I pulled the housing and saw how f'
ed up it looked. I didnt change the poppet valve/whatever is right below the t-stat. I replaced the t-stat, the rubber insert (old one was torn/destroyed) and the housings gasket after scraping all of the old trash out and cleaning it all up.
I ran it once on the house for 20+minutes, with no issues. Gave it a water trial for 25+minutes of full throttle/idling/and 5-6mph and had 0 problems. Gave it a longer trip on a river lake and went a couple more miles with no issues at full throttle.
3rd trip out- night fishing again, same lake. And what do you know, I hear a buzz starting... real quiet and intermittent. It would start for a second or two after 5 hrs of fishing, id wiggle the throttle forward or back and it would go away. Id get on plain and it may or may not come back for 5-30seconds. Its a solid beep but its not nearly as loud- just a low humm. I was further from the launch this time, 4-5miles, worked my way back listening for the beep and it only came on once on the way back for less then 15 seconds Id say- still a solid pee stream and the water is only luke warm or slightly more. I haven't checked the impeller, the lower unit was BRAND new- still had the sticker from mercury, when I bought it a year ago so even if it was replaced a year or two before that it had less then 5 or 6 hrs on it. Is that the next solution and do most merc dealers stock old impellers? Have a tournament Saturday night on the bastard lake I cant catch a break from.... Dont want to have another issue- I will be ordering a water temp gauge/assembly this friday, not soon enough I know
