I came across an old mercury 35 hp at a yard sale serial # 2572045 cheap. Motor run out good but water pump wasn't working so I popped the lower unit off and found out the impeller was toast. Before I replaced that I noticed the base was cracked so I ordered a whole kit. I know that the impeller base is also the upper gearcase seal housing and I was wondering if there is a "special way" its supposed to be installed. cut a long piece of pvc to use as a driver but the only thing I accomplished was trashing the seal. A new base is on the way but I need to know what I have to do to install it without damaging the seal or base. Help please

Re: 1969 Mercury 35 hp water pump

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem with a 69' Merc 500. After pretty much remanufacturing the water pump base, I can now get it to fit without the seal, but not with the seal. I also tried the PVC trick, but it didn't work out for me either! This has become a total exercise in frustration!
