Quick question:
I am a first time boat owner and I recently purchased a 1973 Baja 16' with a hardly used 2000 75hp mercury for $2100 as a fixer upper project, and has never been in salt water. Im putting carpet in, re-covering the seats and fixing some fiberglass near the motor mount, and possibly putting a bimini top on it. I'll be in about $3000 total and I am going to try and turn the boat for a profit. Can any one help me get some information about this year because I cannot seem to find a thing and how much is it worth in your opinion? Thanks!

Not sure what it is worth. Sounds a bit underpowered though, and that would be a strong selling point. Any idea of the max HP rating. I was thinking 115HP would be nice....

Not really sure what the max hp would be, I cannot find hardly any information about this boat. I planned just to keep this motor on it so I don't go to deep in my pockets because I'm trying to re-sell it.

Should be rated for 120, but that 75 will still be fun.

Check out the Baja section of the forum I posted a good history there, also Bajaowners.com and screamandfly.com.

Any specific questions?

That's definitely an interesting "fixer upper project" if you want to turn a profit. I don't know how much money you'll be looking to make on a 39 year old boat with a 12-13 year old engine on it. Have you flipped a lot of boats? Seems like it would be a pretty fun thing to do, but I just fear I wouldn't be able to make enough money to make it worthwhile.

I'd be interested to see how you make out on it.

Quick question:
... and fixing some fiberglass near the motor mount....

The "motor mount" being the transom? Post some photos of what you're talking about, with a boat that old there's a high probability you're dealing with a rotted transom. You absolutely do not want to let that slide as it's a serious safety issue.

Also, as I recall, the early Bajas were built in molds that Checkmate didn't need anymore.

Depending on who you talk to ... I look at it this way: Back then Bajas'n Checkmates were built right down the road from each other in Bucyrus Ohio. A lil incest is to be expected ...?
