junk or not to junk

I have a 78 55hp evinrude a mobile marine mechanic came by and did a compression check, 120 on top cylinder and 90 on bottom, he also said he would not put any money into this motor, some have suggested trying seafoam to decarb, what are your thoughts, Please help i cant afford a new motor.

So he didn't say WHY the compression is down? There are several possibilities. Head gasket. Water ingestion. Broken piston or rings. Cost depends on diagnosis. Yes, the latter two are in the junk catagory if you have to pay to fix it.

jmo, but i would pull the head off it and have a look at the cylinder walls. as F_R said it could be as simple as a head gasket, or it could be a parts motor.... but you need to get the wrenches out to investigate before giving up on it. (gaskets are cheap)

no he didnt say, im going to go with the sea foam and new head gasket, thanks all. worst i can do is ruin it
