Shift cables

Will go in forward but not rev. unless i pull with my finger on the shift plate.Does the boat need to be in the water under pressure running in order for it to shift in rev.Or can anybody tell me what can cause this problem.

Generally speaking no it doesn't need to be in the water, but It would help if you gave us some more details.. like year,make, model, engine make, HP, drive type...

I remember you have a 140hp with a R or MR or Alpha......<br /><br />It Probably Needs a New lower Shift Cable,.......
