VRO is being used as fuel pump, runs good up til aroud 4000 rpm, then begins to surge in and out

Main jet size 76d. But before you start changing the jets, you need to know what carbuator by PN is on your engine. Some 86 engines carbs were replaced with 87 by factory.

I've only had the motor for 2 days..is the 62D jet wrong altogether? Is timing a possibility? Trying to figure out flooding issue...Thinking of using 2 fuel pumps instead of VRO.

You should go to the factory parts catalog website and check out the jet situation to determine just what you have: epc.brp.com. As was noted, your model number listed is from a 1986 model. Carb jets are determined by the model. Your listed model is the "S" model, which is the XP/GT, the high performance version. According to the factory, it should have .076 jets in the carb mains.
