58' Big Twin 35

Hey all, recently bought my first boat a 1959 Lone Star Flamingo 15ft with a 58' Evinrude Bigtwin 35. Having a great time restoring the boat, but I cant lie I dont know squat about 2-strokes. Previous owner rebuilt some of the motor, I just need to finish putting it back togather, magneto, fly wheel, etc... where can I find a manual online that I dont have to shell out $70 dollars for?

Nice investment. I own a '59 Lone Star Newport, myself, plus a '51 Lone Star 14' open boat. I love the '57 - '58 Big Tins. I have a '57 Big Twin in my treasured collection. What do you need to do, to make yours run?

Hi ew. Great find. I like the boat, but I LOVE the motor. These should help you get it up and running again. You can get most routine parts right here at iboats. You really only need 3 things to get them to run; compression, spark, fuel. Confirm each individually then begin dialing in the motor. Holler if you get stuck.

Looks like I need a cam eccentric, where is the best place to find one? Also its still the old style fuel system with the expensive lines. Id like to upgrade to a modern fuel pump system, any tips?

Hello again ew. That's a great deal for $100!!! Can you give us the page/part number you're referring to? If you mead the crankshaft cam that rubs against the rocker arms of the points, you should be able to find them for cheap on ebay, amazon, aomci.org, or right here in the forums for less than $20. You can also convert you motor to a modern, single line, fuel pump set up too. It's a pretty easy job. The most expensive part is the pump itself. You can get an OMC pump, but they're pretty pricey ($80+). Lots of folks use Mikuni brand and/or Briggs & Stratton fuel pumps with great success. They may not look stock and might require some slight modification, but they generally cost a lot less than their NOS counterparts. In fact, check ebay and aomci.org for a good used pump. Yes the crankshaft cam would be the part. Ive found a few on ebay, but not sure how interchangeable they are from year to year. For instance can one for a 57' work on a 58'? Thanks for all the help so far.

Use the parts catalog link I posted to determine the exact part number. You can then look pull up the parts catalog for the '57 model at the same sight to compare the two.

Ya, ive been reading through it. I know the cam piece will be easy, my biggest concern is the electrical. The original flywheel busted, and the previous owner found a replacement, but it does not have a generator. My plan is to run two batteries with a solar panel mounted on the bow. It's not gona look pretty but should do the trick. Since the motor powers itself through the magneto, all the batteries would power would be the fuel pump and stereo. Im assuming the fuel pump needs external power and cant run off the magneto. Or is there a generator kit I can add on?

The fuel pump is run by pulse. You CANNOT use any other type of pump. Is your motor run off a pressure tank now and you are going to swap to a fuel pump/single line setup?

Is it electric start or manual?

currently it is equipped for the original pressure tank, though there is no actual tank at the moment. Yes i want to swap to the pump/single line setup, and this sweet piece of Evinrude art has both pull and electric start

You can either get a bypass cover and fuel pump from a later model Big Twin or go with an aftermarket Mikuni/BS pump.

If you go with aftermarket you simply drill/tap your current bypass cover to accomodate a fuel barb to get your pulse from, then plug the existing pressure line.

Going OEM you simply remove your bypass cover and resinstall one with a pump attached, then route new lines.

Trying to piece together a generator setup can get expensive. Solar trickle charger you mentioned is much easier.

i have tons of parts from a 63 evinrude bigtwin 40hp and have parts from a 64 35hp. i have 2 genertaors and belts if your wanting to go that route.. send me some part numbers and i will see what i have and i also have 3 cam followers
