Need some help please:

1986 /185hp mercrusier / two barrel Rochester carb.

Runs and idles great when I put the boat in the water and start for the first time. Runs in the driveway great all the time and has never done what I am about to describe in the driveway.

Starts easily / idles great /shifts in gear and will motor in idle 500 yards out of no wake zone. Goes on plain fine. Runs at 3200=3800 rpm just fine. Lots of power / never back fires. I can run down the river about 3 miles and back down off the engine to idle just fine. Will idle in gear just fine. I can slam the gas to her just fine and get up on plane. No backfire. Lots of power. Runs smooth.

I can run on down the river another 2-3 miles. runs great at 3200-2800 rpm. Sounds great / very smooth. Come back down to idle and the engine shuts off. I wait 2 minutes and give it a try. Will not start in neutral. I put the lower unit in neutral and give a little gas and the engine try to start by dies like it is starving for fuel. Throttle up in neutral and the engine will start and run great at a high rpm of 1500-1800. If I idle down to go into gear engine dies like it is starving for fuel. I can do this several times with no luck. If I wait 30 mins - 60 mins. The Engine will start just fine and idle. run fine take fuel fine and go up on plane and run like before. As I get back to the marina and idle down about 3 mile run. sometimes the engine will idle just fine and sometimes it will die as before.

I have done the following:
New carb from Iboats installed. Still does the same thing.
new wires, rotor button, points.
new fuel line. checked fuel tank for water / no water. dumped all fuel out and replaced.
I rerouted the fuel line away from the engine thinking I was getting to hot and vapor locking.

I now suspect the fuel pump. I guess???? I was thinking maybe install an electric fuel pump and not pay $400.00 for a new fuel pump. Does anyone know if I am on the right track of testing the fuel pump or am I missing something?
Can I do an electric fuel pump and be ok?

Thanks
