Hi all.....my first post.I just bought a boat with an eight hp Evinrude motor,it looks to be 70's- 80's or so.It's white and light blue. There are two knobs and the pull start.I'm pretty sure one is the choke. The other is like a black plastic key that you can turn either right, left or down and can pull it out. What's that knob for and how do I remove the lid?Is there a on/off control? Thanks in advance.

Re: 8hp Evinrude Cover

The 8hp would be mid-1980s at the earliest. The knobs are for the primer and low speed idle adjustment.

Just for grins - what is your model number? The 8hp cowling fits any number of 4 to 8 horse models and the choke thingy you're referring to sounds more like that found on the 4.5, which was a fuel shut-off and choke all in one. Possible someone swapped out the cowling?

Re: 8hp Evinrude Cover

It's a 2-cylinder, water-cooled, 2-stroke. Mix oil & gas at a 50:1 ratio (1 pint TCW-3 rated outboard oil to 6-gallons gas). Motor MUST have the lower leg submerged in the water to cool properly, with the water level being several inches above the seam between the lower unit and exhaust housing (mid-section).

No on switch, but the off switch should be a button in the tip of the tiller handle grip.

There's a lever in the back of that motor (if my memory serves me correctly) that you pull(push) down and the lid will come off. Post some pics and you can get a better answer to your questions.

Choke to the left that you pull out. Low speed mixture knob in the center that rotates right or left to adjust the mixture (shouldn't be pulling this out).

Latch to release the top cover is on the back of the motor, on the lower cover. Rotate it down and to the opposite side to release the upper cover.
