98 bayliner 19.5 noisy when forwarding

hi everyone....im a new owner of a boat i just purchased 1998 bayliner 3.0 mercury alpha one..im not sure if its normal or something wrong....when the boat is on the trailer and started the engine runs fine,,then i lowered the outdirve close to the ground and move the shifter forward to see if prop will spin....i heard this poping noise or shifting noise at the outdrive...like if its trying to move with noise...is this something normal or broken outdrive...i didnt force the forward shifter after i start hearing a noise...any advice will help and im new at this boat owner..thak you

A video would be much more helpful so we can hear the sounds.

I hope you are water muffing or tanking the drive while running the engine on the trailer.
And FYI, it's not good for the outdrive to be spinning a prop out of water.

yes i have the water muff on the out drive...the sounds like clunk when i gas up the engine and the prop or outboard trying to spin...but what does tanking the drive mean......also theres a trailer switch on shifter..how does that oparate..sorry im just new at this......thanks for the reply.....

A trailer switch is use to raise and lower the out drive while its trailered. And tanked means the out drive needs to be in a water filled tank while its being test ran. running a boat motor with out it being in the water will do a lot of damage real fast..

A video would be ideal for diagnosis, but I will throw out the most likely problems based on your "clunk when I gas up the engine".
It is most likely loose/failing u-joints on the input shaft of your drive. Or, bad bearings in the drive, failing gimbal bearing or engine/drive coupler. Good luck!

BTW, since you are using muffs, I hope you are not running the engine with the drive in trailer position. That puts a mechanical strain on the u-joints that they were not engineered to withstand.
