I would like to write this tip on the forum as i have not seen any answers relating to this problem.

I bought a 1989 Johnson 60 hp which did not want to start. Engine did only smoke and made some puffs.
Using a timing light, i found it was almost 180 deg off, which should be impossible on a 3 cyl.
I checked the usual things. Triggecoil, spark coils, and also replaced CDI box, but it made no difference.
Removed plug on cyl no 1. and checked timing marks. Marks was spot on with cyl no. 1 on top.
I removed the flywheel and found woddruff key was ok.
Checked the flywheel and found some small cracks in the trigger magnets.
Replaced flywheel with a spare i had and assembled the engine. It fired up immediately.

In some way the polarity of the trigger magnets has been turned 180 deg because of the breaks in magnet. Field lines are distored because of cracks.
In my case timing was almost 180 deg off, but i can imagine it can be anyplace depending on where the cracks are located.

The Conclusion is.. Also do check the flywheel magnets for cracks.
Hope this can help others..

Regards
