Gear problems with evinrude 25 hp 1979

My motor have problems with gear lever it felt loose(floppy)and is on foward gear right now if i move the lever back and foward it doesnt do anything i think the shift rod came loose inside the housing where the bolt attach the rod with the gears, I need some advise or help please? Thank You...:confused:

Remove the cover on the stbd side of the exhaust hsg. Move your shift lever and see if the shift rod moves. If it doesn't you have probs up in the power head. if it does you have probs in the g/c.

You may also want to check that the shift lever is bolted down tightly to the shifting rocker mechanism.
