1995 SeaRay Difficult to Start and Stalls When Idling

I have a 1995 200 Bow Rider Select SeaRay. It has a 5.0L V8 MerCruiser engine. This past weekend I was running the boat at cruising speed (~25mph) and then slowed down to stop. As soon as the boat was close to idling, it shuttered and shut off.

I tried starting engine for about 15 minutes but could not get engine to fire. At one point, black soke came from engine compartment. Finally after letting the boat sit for another 5 minutes or so, I was able to get it to start again.

Thinking we were getting low on gas, I took the boat immediately to the marina to fill up. Once again the boat ran fine at cruising speed but shut down when I slowed down to idle speed.

I have checked all the fluids and it appears everything it okay. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might need to do or check?

Does your engine have a quadrajet?

Humm. sounded like classic quadrajet float sticking. What carb does it have, or is it fuel injecton?
