Ok, I messed up big time. I switched batteries while the motor was running because I was in an emergence situation in the water with a dead battery and paniced. I borrowed someones battery started the boat then disconnected their battery. I put the positive lead on my battery then as soon as I connected the negative lead the motor was killed instantly. Of course this made my situation at the time from bad to worse. Now it will fire up but as soon as I let my hand off the key it is killed like the power was shut off. The only way to keep it running is to Keep the key switch to start or have the neutral throttle on full when I start it, but even at that it runs very rough. I'm going to replace the key switch but I doubt that is the problem as the gauges work when I switch it from off the run. I think I messed up my ignition and or charging system... I cant afford to take it to the dealer to do an ignition test so I'm wandering if anyone might be able to help me out with what you may think I might have most likely damaged and how to test it.

I noticed that the trigger on my motor is part of the distributor as apposed to a separate part by the stater. My manual calls my ignition a type 2 and looks like I could just replace the trigger parts. Are the trigger parts something I can get separately or do I have to buy a whole distributor? Is their a test I can do to see if my trigger is bad? My manual only has an ohm test for the triggers that are up by the stater. I'm pretty new to outboard ignitions and anymore info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The trigger is integral to the distributor body. There are new dist. bodies avail on the web for $200+
