I'm an avid reader of these forums for do it yourself problem solving, but never have posted my issues before. Hoping someone can help. I've read other forums on here with similar problems but not exactly my situation...
I have a '97 40HP Mercury Force Outboard on a 2004 16' Fisher aluminum boat. I installed a marine radio in the side main console and connected the power (red) and aux power (yellow) and black (ground) directly to the positive and negative terminals (respectively) on a dedicated battery with nothing else connected to it.
The radio works fine with the engine is off, but when I start it up, the radio shuts off. Not always immediately, but usually within 15-30 seconds. I know voltage drop/surge has been brought up before but that should not affect a radio that has its very own dedicated power source, correct? No charging system or anything. Just a red and yellow to the positive and a black to the negative. Thick speaker wires are used to run from radio to the battery.
My thinking is that it must be electrical interference somehow. But with what? And how is it fixed?
