Has run for 10 years with no prioblems.
Checked for loose connections & tripped C/B ...Felt OK. Reset all breakers anyway.

Now starts perfectly.

Weird that it would run ..........ONLY................ with the key in the starter position.

I would post this in the MerCruiser section for quicker better answers. I have an idea but no specifics...

In most ignitions with a separate coil the ballast resistance is bypassed when cranking and the coil receives power directly from the 12 volt ignition supply. After cranking when the key is returned to Run then the coil gets power thru the ballast resistance circuit, usually it ends up with 9 volts. If the ballast circuit wiring or resistance component is compromised then the coil will not have power when in Run, only while cranking.

Fantastic marine mechanic friend trouble shooted & repaired the problem in 5 minutes.

Loose pins in the plug of the cable at the back of the engine.:):):)
