Lake Mojave - Stay in Laughlin or Katherine's Landing?

My family and I are going to Lake Mojave for 5 days at the end of the month. In the past, we have stayed at the hotel at Katherine's Landing. However, I noticed that the casinos in Laughlin are super cheap now -- about 1/5 the cost of Katherine's Landing. Has anyone stayed in Laughlin and made the 10 minute drive to the lake in the morning? Any suggestions for which casino to stay at?

I agree .. stay in Laughlin. It sounds like you probably already know the drill of getting to the ramp by 6am to launch without a super long line, and be able to get a parking spot relatively close.

I stayed at the Tropicana a few months ago on an off-road expedition and the place was nice. It's been too many years for me to give any other advice for any of the other hotel-casinos. I would go cheap.

Yeah, you are right. It just doesn't make sense to spend so much more for so much less. The kids really like staying by the lake, but I don't think I will hear any complaints about nicer accommodations right on the river with swimming pools and game rooms for the evenings when we return from boating. Now, to just find the right casino.

Same here. I've stayed at the Ramada Express and it was nice,,, but that was years ago. Colorado Belle was kind of old and run down, hopefully they have done some work as the last time I was there was 5+ years ago. I would see what the ratings are through Expedia or another travel site and go from there.

Heck, even if you go with the MOST expensive hotel, you're only going to spend around $30/night :D

Harrah's has good trailer parking if you don't get a slip. The Golden Nugget's buffet is really good. If you are going to trailer everyday and you want some variety, you might take a look at this thread for an option: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=562715

Thanks QC. Harrah's looks nice. It even has its own private beach...and for $25 to $40 per night. The security dept said parking is monitored, but not to leave anything in the boat that is not bolted down...just in case (common sense). We may do the river one of the days, but plan to spend most of the time on the lake.

If you simply have to stay on casino row, I suggest the newly renovated Aquarius, $39 (used to be the Flamingo) and they have one of the better buffets (other than the $9 prime rib feast at the Tropicana Express . . . used to be the Ramada Express). All the casinos have parking lot security 24-7. I used to launch in Laughlin at the Riverside (going downstream) and Katherine (going upstream) but now I stay in Henderson at the Station Casinos and launch at Willow Beach and go downstream to Cottonwood and Katherine. It's more scenic and the best part of lake Mohave is the first 10 miles south of Hoover Dam anyway, if you like steep canyon walls, waterfalls, sandy beaches (not gravel), sauna caves and hot springs (no power boats Sunday and Monday). IMHO

I'll chime in since I was there a couple of weeks ago. I've stayed both at the campgrounds and in Laughlin. I arrived on Friday and called ahead to see if I could book a slip. Sine they're first cone first served, I hurried to get to the marina. When I got there at 5 to 7, the NPS station was closed so I pulled strht in and pulled to grab a slip. I got one, launched the boat then headed straight to Laughlin. Took all of 10 minutes It is really only 1mintes and if needed, you have the comforts and convenience of a ton of shopping in Bullhead City. Gas is cheaper on the way to the marina so you can gas up in Bullhead before you launch

We stayed at the Edgewater this last trip. Yes it's old and worn but the price was right and we had a large group. If you're looking foomething to do there are nightclubs and restaurants at the Riverside. We walked from the Edgewater after sunset to the Riverside by way of the river walk, which is a walkway built for a nice stroll.

If you're looking for comfort and a ton of options the hotels in Laughlin seem like the best bet to me.

Finally something I know about!! We've been going to Laughlin for years. We usually go at least twice a year and usually have a big group of people. Until last year we stayed at Harrahs. It has a great big arcade for the kids, a nice pool and a Baskin Robbins. However the room prices had been creeping up and the elevators in the family tower were ridiculous!! Sometimes you waited in line with 50 other people for 30 minutes while one of the six elevators were running. The last couple of years we've stayed at the Golden Nugget and loved it. The rooms were $25 during the week, and they have a $2 breakfast in the diner starting at 6am. The casino servers were great and we actually did well. Some cabbies have told me that the machines are the tightest at Harrahs. You may want to consider launching at Princess Cove instead of Katherines Landing. It's about another 10 minutes of driving, but much less crowded. Have Fun and be safe!!!

Thanks Riddler. I just booked the Nugget yesterday. I almost booked Harrahs, but all the reviews I read had the Golden Nugget rated better. Funny, a lot of people complained about those elevators. We leave Sunday. Can't wait.

Well, the Golden Nugget was great. Nice rooms, good boat parking, and plenty of great restaurants. It was only 10 minutes from Katherine's Landing where we got a slip for the week.

I am generally not much of a gambler (except for football), but I won $600 on the way out after breakfast on our last day. I hadn't even played $5 yet. Payed for a good chunk of the vacation. I will be staying there again next year.
