i have a 1988 four winns horizon with a 3.0 omc motor. i have been reading and decided to to try to jump the positive side of my batt to the positive side of the coil when i did this the boat started and ran great.
when i take the original wire off the coil and test them i get 12 volts but as soon a i reconnect them it goes down to 0 volts. i am just trying to figure out what is between the key and the coil that could be bad and does that sound like it is the problem

thanks

Re: coil has no voltage to it when key is turned to on position

there is a resistance wire - purple and red one to the coil. - yours may have burned out
or may be a bad/corroded connection
need to check and or replace it with an original wire of same resistance.
I think the wire has 1.5 to 2.5 ohms or something like that.
