4.3 OMC Cobra Misses While Idling but Runs Great When in Gear

I have a 1986 Sea Sprite with a 4.3L V-6 and an OMC Cobra outdrive. I am having an issue with the motor idling rough. When I try to increase the RPM it still misses and will die. However when I put the boat into gear it runs great. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was told there is a switch on the motor next to the carb where the transmission control cable connects that actually causes the motor to run that way when not in gear. The reason is so the transmission can engage the gears and lockup before you push the throttle. The rough idle allow the gears to engage completely.

Other possible causes: Points, Timing, Carburetor.

Check the shift plate, and make sure the shift interrupt switch isn't being activated.
