I just hooked up a used Stringer 800 today and ran it using the garden hose cooling method. I removed the oil level plugs and this is what I found (see pics). Any opinions on what you see?

That is a lot of water intrusion into your oil. Depending on how long it has been since it was last changed, it could be intrusion from the fill/drain plugs if the nylon washers are real beat up, or it could be that you need to reseal the lower drive. Here is a link to the various seal kits for the lower depending on exactly which year you have: http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/c/OMC4H/Lower+Gearcase+Seal+Kits+for+OMC+Stringer

And here is a link to the various seal kits for the upper depending on what year you have:

Here is a link for the replacement nylon washers:

And a link for the replacement rubber washers for the upper gear case vent plug/dipstick and intermediate vent plug: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Upper...3515160--session_id.852324120--view_id.271490

Have you drained the oil from the upper gear case and intermediate housing? If so, how do those look?

Also, you should pressure test the lower, upper and intermediate housings to see if your seals are bad. You can make a tester like this guy did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5JHNy53uk0

or find another route to build/buy one.

some have also mentioned that Home Depot has the right size nylon washers in those self serve bins in the nut and bolt aisle.

an extra step required for pressure testing a 400 or 800. You'll need to take a few feet of 5/8" heater hose and slide it over the bare cable end of the shift cable. Clamp it to the cable and clamp a piece of dowel or bolt in the end of the hose as the shift cable acts as a vent for the lower.

Thanks for that Howard. I didnt know that about the lower. I tried Home Depot and Lowes for those nylon washers and while they did have the correct diameter washers, they were about 1/3 as thick as OEM so I didnt trust that they would work.I also didnt know if doubling or tripling up on them was a good idea either. I just ended up ordering the OEM replacements to play it safe.

Do you have to take the outdrive off to pressure test the upper?
