HELP! Blown Outdrive, what will fit this?

I have a 470 engine and 470 alpha1 gen1 OD. how do i know what outdrives will fit it? i saw an ad for one alpha1 gen1 but the shop said it wouldnt fit because its off a V8 not a 4cyl. mine has 1.8 gears if that matters?

Ayuh,... Ya need a pre-91 drive, with 1.84 gears...

I don't think a gen II will fit without a bunch of extra parts. You could buy an SEI replacement drive for about 1300.00 with a three year warranty right here on iboats. I have used one and they work great.

they look to be split by 1983 and 1991.. found one, but the shop said it wouldnt fit because its off a V8 not a 4cyl ?

Ayuh,... Like I said,... a Pre-91 will fit.... in a 1.84 ratio...

V-8s use 1.50 gears...

The I-4 GMs use 1.98,... That won't work either...

Kracker, not to be a horses rear end...but you need to pay attention to Bond-o. If you want to do this correctly, get either a pre 1991 drive in 1.84:1 ratio, or buy a complete new unit from Sterndrive Engineering (right here on iboats)

The expense of swapping gear sets from one drive to another will match or in some cases/places exceed the cost of a new upper from SEI.

Here is a chart with engine drive combos, you can see what ratios went with what engines.

Basically you need one from another 470, or 4.3 V-6.

You can buy used if you want to, but I wouldn't online. Too much junk stuff being sold out there.

If you can get one from a person locally, and can guarantee it is good, and the price is good.

BTW, that chart is from the Sticky at the top of the forum. ;)

i found a good one from a 4.3, but its a gen II, so will that fit since mine was a gen I ?

only one drive will work, see post #2 and post #6

you can swap to the V8 drive if you swap the engine and everything else as well.

yes, a 4.3 is also 1.84. not to add more confusion to this thread, but you can possibly up-prop a 1.98 ratio drive from a 3.0 L. That's what I'm currently running on mine.

thats what i tried asking earlier is if the CV joint and shaft could just be changed, and prop to use a different model because mine doesnt seem to be available locally used, but tons of 1.98 ones.

also does 1.98R mean reverse rotation?

Changing the gear ratio involves changing the entire upper gear set. Which is difficult and prohibitively expensive.
