Hydrofoil?

Hello I am Brett. Me Dad got a boat last summer and it has worked great. It got on plane super fast and kicked very little water in the air. Yesterday we went tubing and we had 5 people in the boat. The boat lost some speed and kicked a ton of water in the air. I know that part was the weight distribution and some was the drag from the tube. I was wondering if a hydrofoil would help the boat when tubing. The boat is a 18' smoker craft with a 50 horsepower Yamaha. I believe the setup is correct because it runs great when not tubing. Thanks, Brett

Re: Hydrofoil?

Welcome to iboats.

The boat was doing the equivelent of a burn out in a car, you had a big load on the back and the rprop was spinning faster than the boat was goin so it kicked alot of water up.

There really isn't anything you can do, that is just kinda how it works and is normal and a tail won't make it any better.

If the boat normally runs fine I wouldn't do the wing, you want to set it up for what you normally run.

5 people in an 18 foot boot, pulling one more person on a tube, powered by a 50hp outboard... I think you should be happy it moves at anything above hull speed, with that sort of load.

Re: Hydrofoil?

Okay thanks for the help. We actually had five people total. 2 adults 2 teenagers and one child. I was wondering if adjusting the trim for tubing would help. If so which way should I trim it? It is currently in the second spot from the top. Thanks, Brett

Also don't forget that alot of it is the type of tube and how inflated it is. The right tube when inflated enough really doesn't cause as much drag as you would think. I have a 200 johnny and i just took my tale off because I really don't think it does much at all, but I could be wrong though.

You will have to play with the trim to see where it works best, it takes some time but that is the only way to do it short of getting a CMC tilt trim, they are really nice becuase you can add tilt trim to any engine BUT, they are over $500 new, alot cheaper to move the pin a few times.
