I have a 1974 Johnson 70Hp Model (70ESLR74M) Saltwater Edition on a 1964 Evinrude Sweet Sixteen TriHull.

I want to go fishing with this setup without Kicker about 12 Miles/ 20 Kilometers from home. I have tested the Engine @ slow speed in gear where the motor wont stall @ about 2.5 - 3.5 Knots. Maybe around 1000 - 1250 RPM Seems pretty smooth other than the odd shake.

How long can this type of engine sustain idle for trolling, or is it supposed to operate in the upper RPM range? On that note... what are some recommendations of sustained operation @ WOT. I tend to keep it at cruising speed of about 19 - 22 Knots @ just over 4000 RPM & 4500 RPM

The bigger motors aren't happy with extended idling but will do it. They tend to "load up" with unburned fuel. If you open it up once in a while, it'll clear out and continue trolling away.

If everything is set up on that mtr properly (ign, carbs and thermostat ) , it should idle all day long with no probs.
