I've just finished rebuilding my '88 Mariner 115 Inline 6 motor and have a technical quesion I'm hoping to get answered.
After getting everything back together, I found that cranking was tight, like I had 20-1 compression. Had a hard time turning over. So I took the plugs out and found the motor cranks just fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated, hopefullya good one from a mechanic.

Thanks

Re: Mariner 115 inline 6 - Rebuild starting problem

If you honed/new rings the initial turn over is a bit stiffer until it get broke in, metal on metal and what not.

If you did use new rings etc.. did you coat the cylinder wall with 2 stroke prior to assembly?

If not it is dry metal to metal..

By no means am i a "Mechanic", but i just rebuilt a 86 merc 115 and it was stiff as heck prior to break in.

Check starter cables and battery cables and ground cables for clean connections. Maybe starter is not getting full current? With the plugs out they should turn over using finger pressure on the flywheel.
